Silent quitting is a commitment to fulfilling one's job roles and responsibilities without going above and beyond the call of duty (O'Brien, 2022). Quiet withdrawal means working for a set time and turning down other projects and tasks outside of normal duties. Gone are the days of staying at work. Overworking is valued in society, especially by employers, but even the Ontario government has introduced a Right to Disconnect Act, which requires employers to create policies that allow workers to disconnect from work duties, including email, phone calls, video conferencing, and performance working outside working hours (Lecker & Associates, 2022). Interestingly, this law only applies to workplaces with 25+ employees and does not apply to federally regulated businesses (eg, banking) (Lecker & Associates, 2022).

How did silent withdrawal manifest itself? In Canadian workplace culture, many employees experience a lack of pay raises, promotions, or even recognition in exchange for workplace performance (Cullen, 2022; England, 2022). This is a problem with Canadian workplace culture as a whole.

A high percentage of Canadians have a serious lack of work-life balance, leading to burnout, depression and exhaustion (Cullen, 2022). This can be particularly evident in frontline and essential workers. A 2021 study of 5,500 Canadian workers revealed that 35% experienced high levels of burnout and 25% reported that their work significantly affected their mental health (O’Brien, 2022).

What starts as workplace stress or anxiety can quickly turn into a bigger problem. Quiet withdrawal is a buffer against this stress in the workplace and can help prevent employees from becoming so burned out that they are unable to work. Quiet opt-out is consistent with the prevailing discourse of professionalism in Canada, which requires employees to "stay quiet" by not being assertive in communicating boundaries. However, quitting quietly is a way to set boundaries and engage in self-respect in the workplace.
